Embossing and debossing are done by creating a custom metal die of the desired design and applying controlled pressure (and sometimes heat) onto the packaging material. In embossing, the material is pressed between matched dies to raise the design above the surface, while in debossing, the die presses the design inward to create a recessed effect. These processes are commonly used on folding cartons, rigid boxes and corrugated packaging boxes to add texture and a premium feel without using additional inks.
